Organisms have sophisticated systems to deal with inorganic elements. Some metals are precipitated and crystallized inside or outside of living tissues for body protection, accumulation and detoxification of metals. For example, some bacteria accumulate the heavy metals around the cell membrane. The molluskan species produce the calcified shells with fine microstructure. However, the chemical forms of these metals and interaction between metals and organic molecules are unclear. We reveal the molecular mechanism of mineralization process from bacteria and molluskan species. These results will give new insights for environmental bioremediation and industrial developments of new functional materials.
